The 2.5-acre historic heart of downtown — free, open, and ringed by coffee shops and bagels. Small but central, with bronze statues kids love (including the painted Morris Frank & Buddy seeing-eye-dog memorial), benches, and shady paths. Pair it with a bagel run for an easy early downtown loop. Parking is meters and the Headquarters Plaza garage, not a free lot.

The blocks around the Green — South Street and Park Place — are a genuinely handsome, walkable historic downtown: brick storefronts, sidewalk cafes, the 1916 Vail Mansion, and flags along the curb. Most shops don't open until 10, so early it's a quiet architectural stroll rather than a shopping trip — window-shop, grab a coffee to go, and let a toddler roam the wide sidewalks before the traffic builds. Metered street parking and the Headquarters Plaza garage; pair it with the Green and a bagel.

About 15 minutes south: a federal refuge whose trails and boardwalks are open sunrise to sunset, seven days, free. The marsh boardwalk loops are stroller-friendly and full of turtles, frogs, and birds for a toddler to spot. Note the Helen Fenske Visitor Center itself only opens at 10 — but the boardwalks, which are the real draw, don't need it.

It's 6:45am, the kids are up, and Morristown doesn't officially open until 10. But the county seat is quietly one of the best-stocked towns around for the gap: a walkable downtown of 5am coffee and 6am bagels around the historic Green, and a ring of big, free county reservations — Loantaka, Lewis Morris, Frelinghuysen — open from dawn.
Nearby Morris Township, Morris Plains, Madison and Summit add parks, open play and scheduled classes. Each venue has its own Sunday and seasonal schedule; check the place you plan to visit.
The early tier is coffee, bagels, and the parks. The Dunkin' on Lafayette Ave opens at 5, Jersey Boy Bagels (16 South St) at 6, and Roast and LOKL on South Street at 6:30 — all walkable around the Green. Home Depot in nearby Dover opens 6am (7 Sunday). And the big free county reservations — Loantaka Brook, Lewis Morris, Frelinghuysen Arboretum — are open from dawn. The Morristown Diner opens 7 for a sit-down breakfast. The museums, farm, and indoor playground all come later in the morning.
Huckleberry Play in Morris Plains lists open play from 9am daily with no reservation required; check private-party closures and possible weekend time limits. The library opens 9am weekdays, with seasonal Saturday hours. Washington's Headquarters is a museum option from 9:30am Thursday-Monday. Little Gym visits require an age-appropriate class booking.
Loantaka Brook Reservation. It opens at dawn, it's free, and it's built for little kids: a flat paved path perfect for strollers and scoot-bikes, a shaded toddler playground, a brook with ducks, and restrooms. Grab a bagel downtown first, then walk Loantaka before the day heats up. For a more central option, the Morristown Green plus a South Street coffee makes an easy downtown loop; Lewis Morris and Frelinghuysen Arboretum are the other dawn-open parks worth the short drive.
Sunday availability varies by venue. Huckleberry lists 9am open play; Washington's Headquarters lists 9:30am Thursday-Monday; Morris Museum opens 11am Wednesday-Sunday, with Spark!Lab from noon. Fosterfields has conflicting Sunday information on its official page, so call before planning a Sunday visit.
