Taylor Park

The anchor of the whole morning: a playground, the Rahway River running through it, a gazebo, and duck-watching — all a two-minute walk from the 5am coffee on Millburn Ave. Being able to park once and do coffee, playground, and breakfast on foot is the thing Millburn has that most towns around here don't.

Gero Park

Thirty-six acres with the township's biggest playground, plus ball fields and a roller hockey rink to watch. The community pool here is summer-only and opens late morning — the playground is the early-hours draw, and it's rarely got anyone on it before 8.

Cora Hartshorn Arboretum & Bird Sanctuary

Sixteen quiet acres with about three miles of trail, free and open from dawn — the calmest outdoor option in the township and a genuinely good bird-listening walk at 6:30am. Fair warning: the terrain is properly hilly and the trails are dirt, so this is a carrier walk, not a stroller walk. The Stone House itself doesn't open until 9.

Old Short Hills Park

Forty-one acres kept deliberately passive — meadow, woods, and picnic room, with no playground and no courts. That's the point: when you want somewhere to let a kid run without equipment or a crowd, this is it. Pair it with Greenwood Gardens across the road if you're still out at 10.

Starbucks — Millburn Ave

Open at 5 every day, with seats and a bathroom, right in the middle of the downtown block at 343 Millburn Ave. This is the one that makes a 6am Millburn morning work — walk out the door and you're a few minutes from Taylor Park.

Dunkin' — Millburn Ave

Also 5am, also daily, twenty doors down at 363. Cheaper, faster, and the donut is a legitimate bribe on the way to the park.

Bagel Pantry

A 5am bagel counter is a rare thing and this one does it seven days a week — hot bagels before dawn at the Short Hills end of Millburn Ave. Mostly a grab-and-go counter rather than a sit-down, so this is the 'feed them in the car before the park' option.

Hilton Short Hills pool

The wildcard: the indoor pool at the Hilton Short Hills opens at 6am — about as early as indoor swimming gets around here. The catch is you have to be staying there, but a free night on Hilton points unlocks it. Worth knowing for a rainy weekend or a treat.

Millburn Diner

A real diner, open at 7 every single day, with booths, crayon-friendly paper placemats, and pancakes that arrive fast. When the weather has killed the park plan, this is the reliable answer — and 7am is the quietest it ever gets.

Goldberg's Famous Deli & Bagel Chateau

Hand-rolled bagels and a full deli counter at 7, seven days. Bigger and more of a sit-down than Bagel Pantry, and it's on the main downtown block so it pairs with Taylor Park.

Kings Food Markets — Short Hills

Open at 7 daily and almost empty at that hour — a warm, bright indoor lap with a bakery counter, which on a cold or wet morning is a completely legitimate activity. Free to walk, and nobody minds a slow toddler at 7am.

Millburn train station

Free, and for a certain kind of two-year-old it beats every playground in this list: NJ Transit's Morris & Essex trains roll through from before dawn, and the rush picks up hard between 7 and 8. Stay behind the yellow line on the platform, or watch from the lot. Do not pair this with a Fairy Trail visit until reopening is confirmed.

Willow & Whisk

The best new reason to be in downtown Millburn early: an elevated breakfast-and-lunch room on Main St, open 8 to 3 every day, right across from Taylor Park. Bright, big windows, and the food is aimed at the grown-ups without being precious about a kid at the table — do the park first, then walk over.

Pura Vida Miami

Inside the Mall at Short Hills but open at 8am — two hours before the mall itself — so you can beat everyone to a calm, bright breakfast. Smoothies, açaí bowls, and real food the grown-ups actually want. NJ's first Pura Vida.

Millburn Farmers Market

Seasonal and one day a week, but if your Tuesday morning is free it's the easiest outing here — open air in the municipal lot at Essex and Main, free to wander, and a peach to eat on the walk back to Taylor Park. Season dates shift year to year, so confirm before you build a morning on it.

The Busy Bee Indoor Playground

A 3,000 sq ft play space built for the 0–6 crowd — climbing structure, three slides, a play grocery store and a bus-shaped playhouse. Weekend open play is guaranteed 9am to noon; weekday hours flex around private events, so check before you drive over. Socks required, for kids and grown-ups.

Trader Joe's — Millburn

In the old Whole Foods space on Millburn Ave. Nine o'clock is the calm window before the parking lot turns into a contact sport, and the sticker hunt is a real activity if your kid is into it. A couple of listings still show an 8am open — worth a check if you're counting on the earlier hour.

A STEM-leaning play space on Millburn Ave — Magna-Tiles, building challenges, and open play in two-hour slots. The 10:30 open makes it useless for the 6–10 gap, but it's the natural next move when the early morning has run out of road. Reserve online; walk-ins can be full.

Greenwood Gardens

Twenty-eight acres of restored formal gardens next to South Mountain Reservation — grottoes, reflecting pools, and paths a small kid can safely charge down. Ticketed, and only Friday through Sunday in season, with last entry at 3:30. Buy ahead: entry isn't guaranteed at the gate.

Toys R Us (inside Macy's, Short Hills)

The Toys R Us shop-in-shop inside Macy's — free to walk through, and it opens with the store rather than the mall corridor. A short, contained browse that costs nothing if you're strict about it.

The Mall at Short Hills

Worth being honest about: this is a 10am building, so it can't rescue a 7am morning. But it's climate-controlled, spotless, has good bathrooms and a stroller-friendly layout, and Pura Vida gets you in the door at 8 if you need somewhere warm before the gates roll up.

Locust Grove & the Fairy Trail

The Conservancy's September 1 update reports the Fairy Trail and Locust Grove parking lot closed through September 30, 2026. Confirm reopening before visiting. Parking elsewhere does not reopen the Fairy Trail.
