It's directly across Glen Ave from the train station, so you can do fairy houses and train-watching in one stop. Heads up — the Locust Grove lot and the trail have been under a county/Conservancy renovation through 2026, so confirm it has reopened, or park at the Hemlock Falls lot off South Orange Ave.

Millburn and Short Hills are the same township, and on paper the morning looks bleak: the Mall at Short Hills doesn't open until 10, the library not until 9:30, and the deli everyone drives here for is a 9am operation. But downtown Millburn is the most walkable early-morning block in the whole radius — a 5am Starbucks, a 5am Dunkin', and a 5am bagel counter sit within a few hundred feet of Taylor Park, so one parking spot buys you coffee, a playground, and breakfast without buckling anyone back in. Here's the honest order for the 6–10am gap.
Millburn Township wraps Short Hills, backs onto Springfield, Summit, Maplewood, South Orange, and Livingston, and shares the whole southern end of South Mountain Reservation — so read this as a radius, not a town line. The Millburn train station and the Locust Grove trailhead are literally across Glen Avenue from each other, and Turtle Back Zoo, the Home Depot in Union, and the West Orange side of the reservation are all inside about 20 minutes. No — the mall corridors open at 10 on Monday through Saturday and 11 on Sunday, and there's no published early mall-walking program. The workaround is Pura Vida Miami, which opens at 8 inside the building, and the Toys R Us shop-in-shop inside Macy's, which opens with the department store at 10.
