It's 7am, the kids are up, and Livingston's famous stuff is hours away — the deli doesn't open until 10, the library until 10, and the mall is gone altogether. But the town quietly runs a full 6-to-10 morning if you know the order: parks at dawn, a 6am bakery cafe, bagels at 7, a farmers market and a car wash ride at 8, open play at 9. Here's the honest answer for the 6–10am gap.
Livingston backs onto West Orange, Millburn/Short Hills, Roseland, East Hanover, and Florham Park, so read this as a radius, not a town line — Turtle Back Zoo is barely 10 minutes down Northfield Ave. But the town itself carries the early hours better than most: the Shoppes at Livingston Circle (277 Eisenhower Pkwy) alone runs a one-parking-lot morning — Paris Baguette at 6, Ike's Bagels at 7, an ALDI lap at 8:30, Exceptional Explorers open play at 9 — with a 5am drive-thru Starbucks across the street.
More than it looks. The parks — Riker Hill Art Park, Northland Playground, Memorial Oval — are open from dawn and free. The West Essex YMCA opens at 5am weekdays, the Livingston Circle Starbucks drive-thru at 5, Dunkin' around 5, Paris Baguette at 6 (6:30 weekends), Bagel Nosh at 6, and ShopRite of Livingston at 6:30 for an indoor cart lap. Yes — Exceptional Explorers at 277 Eisenhower Pkwy runs open play from 9am on weekdays, and on weekends the 9:00–10:30am session is the only open-play slot of the day, so book it online ahead. Before 9, the indoor options are the 6am bakery cafe (Paris Baguette), the supermarkets (ShopRite 6:30, Kings 7), and the Y's Child Watch from 9.
Effectively, yes — the mall shut in February 2026 and is headed for redevelopment, so there's no more mall-walking morning. Barnes & Noble is moving to a new store at the Livingston Shopping Center (opening late summer 2026). Until then, the early indoor roams are ShopRite, Kings, the RT 10 Farmers Market at 8, and the one-parking-lot morning at the Shoppes at Livingston Circle.
About 4–5 miles down Northfield Ave — roughly 10–12 minutes. The zoo opens at 10am daily, so the play is to run the Livingston morning first (park at dawn, bagels at 7, car wash or farmers market at 8) and be at the gate when it opens.
